The future of QLD is uninsurable.
In the wake of the 2019 Townsville floods, Suncorp wanted to show it was the bank still supporting Queenslanders.
Inspired by my extended family’s homes in FNQ and a passion for democratic architecture, I came up with the concept for Suncorp to create a free, open-source building plan for a house that would bring together the best of existing technology to withstand any future disaster.
Helping Australians rebuild to survive cyclones, floods, bushfires - whatever climate change throws at them.

THE DISASTER PROOF HOUSE
The open-source architectural plans were to include affordable and accessible material recommendations and flame-protectant planting guides, free for any homeowner to use, reducing insurance claims as climate change worsens.
Collaborating with sustainable architects to incorporate the best climate-resilient architectural design from around the world.

Original Queenslanders built on stilts and washable interiors designed to let floods pass through

Updated to flood gapped floors and water resistant interiors

Cyclone proof masonry block bunker houses

Addition of other cyclone proof materials for better aesthetics

Tree planting that acts as a moisture fence protecting properties from ember

Fire resistant materials across the whole build
Off the back of the campaign, the Insurance Council of Australia launched Project Resilience, aiming to embed resilience into the National Construction Code by 2025.
